About Thompson’s

Hi, my name is Leigh Thompson and together with my wife Linda we own Thompson’s Funeral and Monumental Services.

The first funeral we ever conducted in our own business way back in 1993 was for my father. As tough as this was, what the experience did was give me a deep insight into how I wanted to be treated as a bereaved person. It’s this experience which flows through everything we do, a commitment we have always adhered to despite the many ups and downs in the industry.

I feel it’s important to know who you are dealing with when it comes to “saying goodbye” because it’s a highly emotional and difficult time so you want to be sure the decisions you and your family make are the right ones.

Rest assured Thompson’s Funeral and Monumental Services has been journeying with families as they pay a dignified and respectful farewell to loved ones in the Avon Valley and Wheatbelt for more than 25 years. We travel to all country locations and are also available throughout the Perth metropolitan area to conduct cremations and burials at Karrakatta, Pinnaroo, Fremantle and other cemeteries.

We enjoy an enviable reputation due to the care we provide local communities:

  • Our funeral home, mortuary and operational facilities are located at Northam
  • We also have an office in the Perth Hills/Mundaring area
  • And in February 2014, we proudly opened another office in Avon Terrace, York, in a 100-year-old heritage listed building, to care for families in this area.

Funeral DirectorIt’s worth noting that today, more than ever, funerals can be created to suit the life lived which is why we offer special services like ashes by sea, white doves released at services and an extensive monumental division.

One thing we’re often asked is how is, “How is the range of services you offer different to others?”.

For starters we are a genuinely 100% Australian owned local family business. You see in the 1990s the Australian funeral industry changed forever following aggressive buy outs by US companies driven by profit. While these companies still offer quality services, right or wrong, there is a strong feeling in some sections of the community their operations are driven by profits and upselling, at the expense of bereaved families.

KEY POINT: at Thompson’s Funeral and Monumental Services we do not answer to shareholders or a board of managing directors, we make all the decisions with your best interests and wishes at heart.

Here’s where our personal touch comes in…

  • I am a registered funeral and civil celebrant and I’ve worked interstate as a high profile funeral celebrant and funeral planner so I’m acutely aware of constantly changing market trends throughout Australia
  • I’m a pilot with many hours on different aircraft which allows us to offer a unique service of scattering ashes by air particularly on family farms and properties in the Wheatbelt
  • I’m a qualified Sound Engineer and assist you with creating the most appropriate audio visual tribute
  • Linda puts her cosmetic industry skills to work via assistance with mortuary preparation of the deceased
  • I have extensive knowledge when it comes to grief and counselling, and have studied embalming

gurantee

We are proud to be a 100% locally owned family small business operating in a country area and we pride ourselves on all aspects of our service. Caring and compassion is infused through everything we do because it is our belief this should be a gift to fellow West Australians, not a price to be paid.

And yes, we are active members of our community too via…

  • Leigh is the past President of the York Volunteer Workers Club (formerly Apex)
  • We are both past members of Mundaring Rotary Club

We also proudly support the following via sponsorships…

  • Cancer Council
  • Salvation Army
  • Golf Clubs
  • Bowling Clubs
  • Agricultural Shows in our region
  • St John Ambulance
  • Various Community Resource Centres in country towns
  • Careflight
  • York Community Radio Station

And it’s worth noting, we are the only locally accredited Member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the funeral industry’s peak body which is only open to those companies who meet their stringent selection criteria.

And this is probably where our “secret” to success lies: it’s our mission to give grieving families…

  • a choice of funeral director
  • more realistic, cost effective options for the high cost of today’s funerals
  • a high standard of caring and compassion from a husband and wife team who have been through this experience themselves

People for whom we’ve created an appropriate and moving tribute for their loved one have been more than happy to tell their friends and family about their positive experience.

We are noted for our focus on you. You’ll never see us try and rush you to suit our schedule or commitments. In fact, we are always one of the last to leave the cemetery and stay with your family for as long as you need us.

And the biggest one of all…

You deal with the same person for the whole funeral process from start to finish, you’re never shunted off to the next person on our employee list.

So please, take a few minutes to go through our website thoroughly. You’ll find it informative, interesting and hopefully “possibility expanding” as you begin or continue your journey towards selecting the most appropriate way to say good bye.
